The impact of Covid -19 is felt all across the world including India where the number of Covid -19 cases drastically increased in the first and second waves, which affected our overall population. During this pandemic, our knowledge of Ayurveda has supported us through these difficult times. Ayurvedic wisdom or “Science of Life” was developed in India between 2500 and 500 BC. It is one of our most cherished possessions, and we Indians take great pride in it.

According to the LANCET report on COVID-19 third Wave, a study was conducted over Indian children, and it was found that the COVID-19 symptoms appears to be comparable globally, as reported by PTI. Most of the children affected with COVID-19 are asymptomatic, and amongst those who are symptomatic, only mild infections were predominant. Many of them had fever with respiratory problems, and the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms (like diarrhoea, vomiting, pain in abdomen) was observed. The proportion of symptomatic children increases as age increases, so does the severity in such age groups. On analysing the data, the mortality rate among hospitalized children was found to be 2.4% for covid-positive patients. Also, 40% of the children who died had Comorbidities. And, 9% of all hospitalized covid–positive children suffered from severe illness.

The LANCET Report on Multi-inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), also known as paediatric inflammatory multi-system syndrome, is a new dangerous childhood disease that is temporarily associated with Covid-19. Their research yielded 38 observational studies which included 662 patients (children). While, 71% of children were admitted to the intensive care unit, only 11 deaths were reported. Among the patients, the most common symptoms were fever, abdominal pain or diarrhoea, and vomiting. Serum inflammatory, coagulative and cardiac markers were considerably abnormal. Mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation were necessary in 22.2% and 4.4% of patients, respectively. An abnormal echocardiograph was observed in 314 out of 581 individuals with depressed ejection fraction being the most common aberrancy.

On a medical Research Report by PGIMER and Central Council of Biomedical Research, Swarn Prashana (an Ayurvedic medicine) was found to increases the Immune Cells and T-Cells. T cell is a type of lymphocyte that plays an important role in the adaptive immune response. Swarna Prashana (oral administration of gold as electuary), was created under the supervision of paediatricians for infants. The formation of Swarna Bhasma was based on a study, that was conducted among infants with respect to anthropometrical, haematological and immunological parameters. It was found that, oral administration of gold in infants along with ghrita (aloevera) and honey, for a period of 28 days has helped in increasing the immune cells among infants.

Another study was conducted on Swarna Prashan by SDM College of Ayurveda and Hospital, in Hassan Karnataka. In which, 30 children between the age group of 3-8 participated in the pilot clinical study. They were administered 1 ml Suvarna Prashan (also known as Swarna Prashan) once daily for 30 days before food on empty stomach. After the treatment, the infections were reduced by 50-66%, disturbance in sleep was improved by 69.22%.
