The ninth edition of the IDF Diabetes Atlas offers projections that continue to put India at the second slot right up to 2045. And the numbers are staggering — just over 134 million Indians will be diabetics in the next 25 years.

India is facing an epidemic of diabetes, with high prevalence in urban areas. Over the past 30 years, the prevalence of diabetes has increased to 12-18% in urban India and 3-6% in rural India with significant regional variations. These rates in India are 50-80% higher than China (10%).

Another 14% having prediabetes ─a harbinger of future diabetes─ is as high as diabetes in Indians.Indians develop diabetes at a younger age and those younger than 45 years accounts for 36% of all diabetics in India. Longer duration of diabetes leads to greater complications and this could threaten the national economy.
The most common long-term diabetes-related health problems are: damage to the large blood vessels of the heart, brain and legs (macrovascular complications) damage to the small blood vessels, causing problems in the eyes, kidneys, feet and nerves (microvascular complications).

Government reports on disease burden in india :-
The NHP- (National Health Policy ) data highlighted that “decline in morbidity and mortality from communicable diseases National Health Profile 2019 have been accompanied by a gradual shift to, and accelerated rise in the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).”

The top NCDs statistics in India are cardiovascular disease (CVD)-0.30%, diabetes-4.75% , hypertension ( blood pressure )- 6.19 % , cancers-0.26 %, as per the report stated.

Naturopathy history in India –‘Naturopathy’ as a discipline in alternative medicine is an import from Germany via the US in the late nineteenth century. However, it was understandably not considered alien by Indians as they could relate with the concepts of the ‘Five Great Elements’ to the Pancha-mahabhutas (mud/earth, water, sunlight, air and ether) of Ayurveda and the principles of ‘fasting and vegetarianism’, which were the founding pillars of European naturopathy. It was readily adopted as practices of fasting (‘lankhanam paramaushadham‘, that is, fasting as a panacea for all diseases), exercise, fresh air and other similar principles were already a part of Indian culture.

As the world adapts itself to the concept of a ‘new normal’, one of the learnings of the Covid-19 pandemic has been the importance of a good immune system and overall health. Globally, the attempt is to explore practices that would boost body’s immunity and encourage an overall healthier lifestyle. This has resulted in an amplified interest in alternative therapies such as yoga and naturopathy.

HIGHLIGHTS OF WEBINAR :
Webinar aim is to highlight the age-old Ayurveda principles & treatment methodology , which is acting as a savior mechanism to combat pandemic like situation .
Human body have three types of immunity –
1st -Innate immunity – Inborn immunity of person

2nd – Adaptive ( acquired ) immunity – As the body gets exposed to several diseases or gets vaccinated, we build up a library of antibodies to different pathogens and are referred to as immunological memory.

3rd – Passive immunity – immunity is “borrowed” from another source, but it does not last indefinitely.

An antigen is any substance that can spark an immune response. The immune system is spread throughout the body which involves white blood cells called leukocytes and Lymphocytes help the body to remember previous invaders which comprises of two main cell – B lymphocytes (B cells)- produce antibodies, and other T- lymphocytes (T cells)- they destroy compromised cells in the body and help alert other leukocytes. Thus immunity is built in the body to combat any eternal pathogen invasion .

Now let me give a brief intro about what is the ayurveda role to build immunity –

According to Ayurveda principles, prevention of diseases by increasing immunity is of first priority and second priority is given to treating the disease. As per the reports of WHO, Ministry of AYUSH, news updates, and opinions of experts – the herbal Rasayana drug, which has proven immunomodulatory activity, provides ways for evolving physiological responses to build immunity.Person with impaired immunity is more susceptible for evolved pathogen of coronavirus group and thus immunity is an important preventing factor.

As prevention is always better than cure, Ayurveda Rasayana (rejuvenation) herbs, Yoga exercises, Pranayama (special breathing exercise), and personal hygiene guidelines can be helpful strategies in controlling the spread of COVID-19.
